Crushed by Criticism

December 6, 2010 in Spiritual

It’s hard to describe it but we’ve all felt it. That crushing, debilitating feeling that you are the scourge of another’s existence. For reasons unknown, another human being doesn’t like what you do or who you are. Their words and reasoning somehow get back to you.

I’m not entirely certain why at times it’s easy to brush it off while other times, it stops you cold. Devastated and defeated you shut down. It might be called criticism but it feels like the end of the world.

My dad used to say if they are talking about you they are leaving someone else alone.

Doesn’t make you feel better does it?

Reminds me of Elijah…

Elijah pulls off a remarkable feat that should have put his nation back on track and had its leaders admiring him. Instead he finds the first lady sharply criticizing his methods and placing a death sentence on his head.

So like every brave man responds when confronted with intense criticism, he shuts down and runs for the nearest cave. Depressed, defeated and utterly debilitated, he cries out to God for relief but finds none. Rather, in the deafening silence of his personal cave he gets fresh marching orders. He receives what may have been the most important assignment of his life; to appoint and train his successor. Refocused, Elijah marches off with renewed vision and purpose towards the destiny God has for him.

Well? Did you catch the solution to that overwhelming feeling of being criticised?

Forget about the past and press on to the future.

Refocus on your purpose and calling.

Walk directly out of your density into your destiny.

Try it and let me know how it goes in the comments!

LOOK to See Your Future All Put Together

February 28, 2009 in Spiritual

I was reading in Ezekiel the other day and something really caught my attention.

dry bones

Yaah I know… there’s a whole lot in Ezekiel that should catch my attention. It’s a book full of colourful and exciting language as well as some bizzare imagery. I’m surprised we don’t see more quotes from Ezekiel on Ed Hardy tees.

The first part of Ezekiel 37 metaphorically illustrates a very lost and defeated group of people. They are described as dry, disconnected bones. ‘dem dry bones’

Here’s what particularly caught my attention:

Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to these bones and say, ‘Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am going to put breath into you and make you live again! Ezekiel 37:4-5 (Message Version)

Did you see that?

Before anything happens to this discouraged, defeated group, they had to LOOK. They had to get a vision of it all coming back together for them. (literally!)

How important is it to your future to LOOK?

Listen carefully to the messages around you. Some of those messages should be ignored, because they contribute to a picture that is not what you want to see. Other messages reinforce the picture of your future that is good, progressive and positive. Listen to those.

Observe how your perspective affects your actions. If your perspective is off, your actions will lead you no where. Dead end!

Orient yourself toward your future not your past. The past may have been dry and dead but the future is alive with possibility

Keep the vision in front of you. No matter what your current situation, if you will keep the vision alive in you, it will stay alive for you.

The remarkable thing to me is that the first step to having a GREAT life is to see it. Look at it everyday and one day you will have it.

Let me ask you this: what is the one thing right now, that makes it hard for you to see a picture of your GREAT future? Can I help?

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall, Who Am I Behind My Skull

September 6, 2007 in Personal Development

Okay… it’s a lousy title. I couldn’t think of anything to rhyme with wall. At least not anything that conveys the idea of how we really see ourselves.

reflection.pngI’ve had far too much time lately to think about how I see myself and by extension how others see themselves.

It’s really true… the way you look at yourself either limits or releases your potential.

A couple of weeks ago I ended up in a wheelchair for two days while were traveling. My back has been giving me a great deal of grief the last couple months which incidentally is why I haven’t posted in a while. I can’t sit at a desk for extended periods of time and I still have to get my real work done.

Anyway back to the wheelchair. After refusing to use the chair and trying to walk until I simply could not… I succumbed to the wishes of my family and sat down in the wheelchair so they could maneuver me around. Within a couple hours of first sitting in that chair I had a sudden realization… my mindset had changed. I was no longer fighting the idea, I was enjoying it.

Nothin’ wrong with that you say. And you’re right. I had accepted my reduced mobility.

Instead of trying to walk, it was easier to be pushed around. Something in my motivation and view of myself left me content but it actually scared me. I could see myself staying in a wheelchair. I was confusing resignation with contentment.

At that moment I realized that I couldn’t risk keeping an image of myself in a wheelchair in my head. I had to get rid of the wheelchair in my head before I could get rid of the wheelchair I was sitting in. I had to create the picture, I couldn’t let someone else do it for me.

  • People can overcome tremendous obstacles when they can see themselves past the obstacles.
  • To go where you want to go in life you must somehow see yourself already there.
  • You stay where you are when you see yourself as you are. Not as what you will be!

The bible says that even God calls things that are not, as though they were.

Oh and by the way, I’m not in the wheelchair. In fact I’ve started some new therapy and my back is improving. I even had enough time to post today.

Let’s try something together. What do you want to be six months from now? How would you describe it? Can you describe it in a comment that would give others a picture of the person you will be? Can you see it?

Let’s talk!
