I'm paraphrasing Jim Rohn - he said there is not enough time to read all the good books, never mind the lousy ones. Its the same with blogs - not enough time to read the good ones, never mind the lousy ones. To me the blogosphere is like a giant all-you-can-eat buffet. I take a little taste of everything and come back for more if I like it.

Thanks, Tom (TRCoach)

Chris... yeah FriendFeed kinda scares me. Probably as technology continues to advance the biggest advances will come in filtering.
Hey why would I want to unfollow you???

Think about FriendFeed. Want to amp up noise? Watch through the lens of all the various touchpoints of the web. There's tons of noise. Even on a blog that you consider valuable, the percentage of top shelf posts to reasonably not bad posts is changing.

Filters that go more towards semantic values than boolean will eventually fix that. Something like Google Reader Shared Items without the humans, or with them - who knows? - will still do better than just a straight subscribe.

Remember, with Twitter, you can always unfollow. : )

Dave,

I totally agree. I mean, there are always going to be "off shoot" posts and things done just for fun, and that is all well and good. However, if people can't say "This blog is about ___________" then that blogger is definitely on the wrong track.

Lexi, I had Bad Behavior enabled but it started acting "badly" so I had to deactivate it. I know it helps a lot, but it stopped working for me. One thing it didn't catch though was spam trackbacks. I don't know if you're getting those but they are starting to be more frustrating than the comments.

As for well meaning... I'm just trying to be nice!

Aaron, I think we have to be so much more selective and focussed on what is really important to us. Maybe what we really need is a fresh lesson on keeping the main thing the main thing.

Dave,

It will be interesting to see if anyone else has an opinion on this. I, for one, am really feeling the noise.

What once were blogs that I gladly added to my RSS feed with every intention of reading frequently have now become just one of hundreds. Even my "A-list" blogs don't get as much attention from me anymore because so much of it has already been said and done.

I know there are people who have a lot time to read blogs, and that's great. However, for everyone else, there needs to be some resounding reason to keep reading a blog even though there are thousands of others to choose from.

Hmmm, Dave, why do you think the spam is from well meaning people anyway?
I installed the Bad Behavior plugin on my blog and it leaves hardly anything for Akismet to clean up. I had avalanches of crud before that, so I love it!

That is the only good answer I have to any of this...
