I’ll apologize in advance for this way off topic post but I just got back from the best day of snowboarding in my life and it was only 15 minutes away from my house.
Revelstoke Mountain Resort has been in the works for more than 20 years but as of December 22, 2007 it is now a reality. With nearly 5000 vertical feet right now and 6000 feet planned for the future, this is one big hill.
We started off the day on the high speed gondola that took us 7 minutes from loading to unloading. Then a short ride down to the high speed quad chair took us another 7 minutes up to the current top. We snowboarded for close to 7 hours in picture perfect snow. Wide runs, lots of variety and plenty of speed and air were only the start of the nearly perfect day.
A typical run from the top, took about 45 minutes. We stopped several times to just look at the gorgeous view of the columbia valley then realize we had barely started on our way down. Once again… this is one big hill.
On the last run of the day we hit boarding gold. Even though we had certainly not seen every run, we decided to try out one of the black diamond runs on the edge of the inbounds area. Were we ever surprised to discover that just past the last intermediate run we got bogged down in about 3 feet of pretty nice powder. Since there were several skiers ahead of us, we followed their lead and took off our boards and walked about 100 feet to the most pristine field of fresh powder I have ever seen. After a brief excited discussion among my two other cohorts, we decided this would be a great place to drop down into this absolutely unreal powder.
As we rode through this incredible field of nearly untouched powder, I was amazed that here we were riding in powder that most people pay hundreds of dollars to see. It cost us the local rate at the hill a 15minute car ride and a 100 foot walk from the top of the lift.
By the way did I mention there is a lot of powder at Revelstoke Mountain Resort?
At the end of the day I was absolutely wiped out but exhilarated. This is truly a world class ski development.
And I rode it today!
I wish I had more pictures to share with you but honestly, I didn’t want to take my camera up on the hill. I’ll have a few more pictures in a couple of days.
