daveolson.ca is giving away money!

Today is help someone help someone else day!

Last week we ran a successful experiment to do something for someone else. I learned something really important about generosity. Some people want to be generous but they don’t have the resources. I’ve been thinking about it all week and I have an idea.

Here’s my plan:

I’m going to give away two (that’s right two) $25 gift certificates for kiva.org. You can use the gift certificate to help out whatever entrepreneur you want. And when they have paid the loan back, you can lend it out again or keep it for yourself. (bet you won’t be able to keep it)

As an added incentive I’m also going to set aside $5 for each person who participates in this project. Whenever there is $25 earned, I’ll lend it to an entrepreneur at Kiva.org.

Okay now the rules:

Help me improve my site

Now you already know that I’m not big on site reviews. I completely agree with Bri on that one. However I do want your feedback so I’m asking you to leave a comment with a constructive review. Anything you can do to help promote this project would be awesome. If you have a blog and you want to write a review on your site and link back to me, that would be great too. I always appreciate the linkbacks as we all do in the blogosphere. I guess we just like people talking about us.

Let me know what’s good about the layout? What’s bad about the layout? What about the content, accessibility etc? Do you like the colours and graphics or not? What do you suggest I change?

The experiment is going to run for two weeks until the 26th of April. So late that night I’m going to choose two reviews that are the most helpful and I will award the gift certificates. And of course I’ll contribute to Kiva every time there are five new eligible comments.

Looking forward to your help! Join in.

Hi Dave, nice idea! (as usual :) )

Well, i think your content is awesome, and i also really like your signature at the bottom of each posts, helps branding of your site, the overalll layout is really cool, and looking good. Font size and colors are perfect. The only thing i would change is the color of the links in the sidebar, it’s a little hard to read with that background color (no need to change the bg color of the sidebar, but just the color of the links in there) Your site is fast-loading and easy to read, i really like what you did with the top menu too! Maybe a little picture of you at the top of the sidebar would be cool, with contact link or something. Just a thought. But overall i really like your site, and you know how much i enjoy reading it. :)

Your content is awesome as it touches everyday work or personal life.

What I like about your site: (a) the neat layout (b) white background (c) easy to ready header and body font (d) images accompanying post to break monotony (e) “Dave” Signature (f) Popular Posts at Side Bar.

What I believe are areas that can be improved are: (a) a more heartening colour than grey. Grey is a sombre colour, not a colour to inspire or encourage or cheer someone up. Yet your site is one that touches life. I would prefer a more inspiring colours like the morning sky blue, a refreshing field green and the likes (b) Top bar with Dave Olison to be more distinctive. It is OK to have it DAVEOLISON but it gives rise to different interpretation and pronounciation. You might like to make a distinction using colour, font or even your signature. (c) Change colour of sidebar text as reading is difficult. (d) “Separate” navigation bar like Home, Contact etc away from your Top Banner by colour or boxes as your Top Bar should be about you, your brand, your brand persona. (e) Add a photo of yourself, no need in suit or formal, more important to show us the real person that is inspiring and encouraging us with your wisdom.

That’s all for now. I’m sure going to follow-up on your blogs. Hopefully you can help me to improve on mine too. It’s my intention to help people to understand that marketing and advertising is not as difficult as some guru made out to be. I like to share my experience on how people can market themselves, their business and yes, their blogs too.

    Jonathan,

Thanks for the comment. I’ve set aside $5 for Kiva on your behalf. When I accumulate $25 I’ll lend some more money through Kiva.

I’ll definitely have to do something about the sidebar links. I have to figure out what colour would still fit with the current colour scheme.

Check my latest post. I tagged you for a personal disclosure meme. If you’re up to it!

    vivienne,

Thanks for the very helpful comments. I also got your email. Thanks.

I definitely need to work on the header for branding purposes. I like your slogan idea too.

I’ve set aside $5 for Kiva. I’ll make a loan through Kiva when I accumulate $25.

Dave, the color of the links in the sidebar is way easier to read! good choice of color ;)
One thing, teh font size is still a little small, it is definitely easier to read since you changed the ffont color, but increasing the font size might help also (like 11px or something, it looks like it’s a 10px, it’s not a big step, but it could make a huge difference)

keep it up Dave, you truly have a great blog (and great-looking too), great writing style, and meaningful topics!

Jon, the colour on the sidebar was Liz’s suggestion. Actually most of the changes were her suggestion. I think I’ll probably increase the sidebar font too. Rory suggested that too. Thanks for you help.. really!
