Self-discipline update #2

March 6, 2007 in Personal Development

Well I’ve finally finished following my own advice and have prioritized my list of tasks, projects and goals. As I went through the process I found that of course it was not nearly as easy as I had hoped. Not everything fit as easily and tidily as I had hoped. While I could usually place the overall project into proper priority, the sub categories got much more complicated. There was the sequence that things had to be done in and some things were more important to the project than others. It made things more complicated but by keeping to my original plan of eliminating somethings and then prioritizing according to what was important to those closest to me and then based on urgency I got it done.

I did discover a really interesting thing once I started transfering items to my current work list. Even though I placed them in priority order, when I started working on the list, I gravitated toward the things that I wanted to do over the things that took a lot of effort. Now don’t get me wrong, I am already becoming more productive as a result of what I have done so far, but I now realize that there is a major obstacle I need to beat. How do I keep the main things the main things? How do I keep on track with my plan?

Here’s my list and setup in Word. The tabs on the right side are the major categories of tasks, projects and goals.

So the next couple of things I’m going to take a look at are my schedule and rewards. Maybe there are some times and location that make it easier for me to do what I don’t want to do and how can I motivate myself to do the things I hate.

So far my search of the blogosphere hasn’t given me much help, although I did discover that I’m still really working at the first level of Personal Development. I’ll keep you informed as to my progress.

Any ideas??? Leave them in the comments.
